Across the desert: Aboriginal Batik from Central Australia
|
The departments of Indigenous Art and Australian Fashion and Textiles will present an exhibition on the evolution of Batik in the central and western deserts. Batik will chart the development from the first groundbreaking art classes held at Ernabella in 1971 and Utopia in 1977, to
the assured expertise with the medium in the 1980s and 90s to the
exquisite work from present day workshops. It will contrast experimental
cotton Batiks of Warlpiri and Pintupi occasional Batik artists with the
sophisticated raiki wara (long cloths) from Ernabella and Fregon. Featuring
the diverse and exceptional work from Ernabella, Fregon, Utopia,
Yuendumu and Kintore, the exhibition will showcase the NGV’s unrivalled
Collection of Indigenous textiles.
The exhibition will coincide with the 60th anniversary of the
establishment of Australia’s longest running art centre at Ernabella.

Klippel/Klippel:Opus 2008
|
Robert Klippel is regarded as Australia’s most important sculptor of the post–war 20th century period. Known for his abstract assemblages created from found objects he is a distinguished figure in the history of Australian art. Andrew Klippel, Robert’s son, is a composer and musician who has achieved international recognition as a solo artist, writer and influential music producer. This exhibition presents a synthesis of the immense creative talents of these two artists. Klippel/Klippel: Opus 2008 is a unique and compelling sensory experience. Conceived by Frances Lindsay and developed in close association with Andrew Klippel, the exhibition presents a group of Robert Klippel’s small–scale sculptures that were produced during the 1980s and 1990s — some of which have never been publicly displayed. It also includes the monumental bronze work No. 709. Andrew has arranged for this work, which Robert was preparing to cast at the time of his death, to be executed for the NGV and included in the exhibition. And, in an important artistic collaboration, Andrew Klippel has composed a companion audio response to his late father’s work. Klippel/Klippel: Opus 2008 is an extraordinary and immersive exhibition that celebrates creative genius.
